Leo Laporte,
Please I beg you for the love of God and the sanity of all the listeners to TWIT (This week in Tech), please do not bring back Jason Calacanis (pictured here).
He manages to horde the entire podcast and no one can even get a word in.. I love listening to John, Patrick, and the others but when this guy comes on I find that I’m constantly screaming at my computer because he can’t stop talking about himself.
I don’t know the guy, I just just don’t think he brings anything valuable to the show. He has his own media to tell what he thinks, we don’t need to hear it on TWIT. Everyone else brings something interesting and enteraining to the show. What’s horrible is that he can’t stand to be stood up and was constantly taking potshots at John C. Dvorak!
Please, please he’s does nothing for the show!
July 20th, 2005 — Apple, podcasting
When I first heard that iTunes was going to support podcasting, I was naturally excited. However I think Apple has done a poor job of implementing and integrating podcasting into iTunes. I recommend that you consider taking a look at iPodderX.
There are too many features that are missing from iTunes 4.9 compared to iPodderX or even the open source project iPodder. For one thing, why should I have to have iTunes running to see if there are new podcasts that I have subscribed to? iTunes should a service at scheduled intervals check the RSS feed of the subscribed podcast, if a new podcast exists, download it and have it ready for me to listen to. iPodderX does this very well, and this feature alone is worth the price of the product.
A feature I like of iPodderX is its ability to create playlists for each specific podcast. It makes it very easy to find what I want to listen to.
A complaint that I have heard from others, is that it should not be up to Apple on what podcasts should make the list. (Thank the maker, at least its not Microsoft!). The ability to find a new podcast from an unknown person, is what made podcasting interesting!. The top 100 iTunes podcasts are becoming more of the commercial programs that you can hear on the good old radio in your car. Maybe that’s what people want to listen to, but at least let the little guy be given the chance to be found.
The table below gives a side by side comparison of iTunes 4.9 pocasting and iPodderx
It’s easy to see why iPodderX is the ultimate podcasting client and newsreader. iTunes doesn’t
even come close…

July 15th, 2005 — Microsoft, podcasting
The News.com article states that Microsoft employees have been told not use the term “podcast” when creating their own podcasts. Instead they must call them a “Blogcast”!
I love the last line in this article:
“It may turn out that podcasting is nothing compared another Apple-related phenomenon sweeping the industry: iPod-envy.”

If you have not already checked out the MAKE podcast you should do so. Use iTunes 2.9 to subscribe to it.
WIth the use of the extended RSS, they were able to include Video! It runs in the bottom left section of iTunes. You can then click on it and view the video in its own window!
This may not be an audio podcast, but who said we could not include Video for this new media!
June 30th, 2005 — Apple, podcasting
If you have not noticed, iTunes 4.9 now supports podcasting. What’s very cool is that Apple has extended the RSS feed to include a time frame to change the graphic artwork at the bottom left hand corner of iTunes. Right now the only podcasts that I have seen using it is Apple it self. However the ability could provide other podcasts a way to do advertising or give cool information while listening to the podcast.
Now all I am waiting is for Phil to do his daily podcast!! Come one Phil I know you want to do it!
UPDATE: Thanks for correcting me on the version number! All I can say is DOH!
May 14th, 2005 — podcasting
Looks like Podcasting is taking over now.
I’ve been listening to Podcasts for about 1 year now and it pretty cool. I found this link during the Iraq invasion where Adam Curry was with the Troops of Holland. I wanted to see if it was the same Adam Curry from MTV days. Yes it was but more importantly he was doing this new type of blogging. Instead of writing about things, he was recording it in an MP3. But it was not yet called a podcast. I was not until several months later that a Podcast was created.
Adam Curry is known as the father of the PodCast.
What is a Podcast?
Well it’s nothing new really. Its a recorded show from anyone that is stored in an MP3 format. So what makes it so special? The technology that gets you the podcast.
There are several programs now, but the one I use is call iPodderX. The program uses an RSS feed to subscribe to a podcast. When a new podcast is available, the podcast (mp3) is automatically downloaded into iTunes for you to listen to.
So why is it called Podcast?
Well the name comes from Adam Curry (Yes the headbanger DJ or the 80’s on MTV). He came up with the idea and created (some debate he actually wrote any of the code) the first iPodder program. To be honest it was nothing to brag about, but it did the job. Since then its been updated by a group of developers.
The idea was to download these mp3 shows into iTunes and then the next time you automatically synced to your iPod, you would have the mp3 available for you to listen. Hence the name PodCast!
Do I need an iPod to listen to Podcasts?
Nope! In fact I rarely listen to the shows with my iPod. I listen to it while I am working on my G5 with iTunes.
Where can I get iPodderX?
You can get the program here at the iPodderX download page
How do I find Podcasts?
Go do podshow.com
It’s broken down into categories so you can pick and choose what kind of content you may want to listen to.
Who creates Podcasts?
Anyone can create a podcast. If you have a computer with a recording program and a mic, you can create your own podcast. After you record your show, you need to add it to an RSS feed that anyone with a program like iPodderX can then subscribe to the podcast.
Everyday folks are creating their own shows (Right now thats majority of the podcasts). However your seeing more and more professional shows being ported to podcasts.
Leo LaPorte from the old TechTV show the Screen Savers has his own podcast. (several now). A good one is from his radio program each Saturday on KFI 640 (LA’s largest talk radio show) Recently the old screen savers guys have gotten back together to do a regularPodcast!
Even the new TV show Battlestar Galactica has its own Podcast each week from the writer/producer of the show.
UPDATE: Phil does point out that Dave Winer claims that he invented podcast. Yes I believe Dave had something to do with it but he never ran with the idea or had the passion for it.
I do believe that it was Adam’s idea to take the mp3 file, have it available to subscribe to with an RSS feed, and then an application running on your computer automatically add it to iTunes and finally on your iPod. Hence the term podcast.
To this end I am still saying the Adam did invent podcasting because podcasting its the whole idea, not just the recording of an mp3 and posting it on your blog. I can guarantee you that if it were not for Adam there would be no podcasting today!
