I never thought those words would ever come out of my mouth! I used to look forward to what was up the sleeve of *icro**** and got giddy like a girl when new things were introduced! This year………………………YAWN!!!!
So what changed?
*icro**** technology has become extremely, extremely boring. Nothing really that radical has come out for several years now. When .*** first came out it put *icro**** back in the drivers seat! They were now ahead of the curve and were no longer playing catchup with Java and the rest. However the last few years while *icro**** was developing sub par additions to .net, the rest of the world moved on with Web 2.0. Now it looks like *icro**** is playing catchup again. And just like last time right when they finally catch up the economy goes south. (Remember 2000 and 2001 when .net was launched and the .net bubble bursted and now were about to hit another bubble.)
So what’s new recently that really not caught on:
S********** is trying to be Flash. Not widely accepted and I doubt it will ever. I would not bet the bank on this one.
*** is trying to be Ruby on Rails. If your going to use ***, use Rails! Why bring all that additional luggage with you that comes with .net.
A***.n** is trying to be jQuery (Thank God they realized that jQuery rocks and runs circles around a***.n**) Again just use a lightweight javascript engine. Several very good ones out there!
********** ***** Server (B******** and ********)- The biggest disappointment for me! I spent 2 years of my life developing a kick ass addin for it but because of lack of adoption rates (for the b****** and ********) and the huge problems it has its been next to impossible for people to use our add-in. They love our add-in but they are gun shy about purchasing *** because of the less than stelar kickoff of the product. Time to see the boat is not sailing on this one and call it a day and move on to something else. As any product, it seems that Version 3 will be the killer version. Maybe version 2.
Will *** 2008 blow us away… Probably not (I really hope I’m wrong I want some kick ass new announcements to get me excited)
So unless *icro**** introduces something mind blowing at ***, I’ll think I’ll pass. The last two I went to were lack luster at best. The one in 2003, nothing came out of it (Remember when everything was going to be a service aka H**lst***m) and the last one was when they introduced W** and W**. Both have not had the success you thought they would have and there is has been very little demand for this types of apps. I’m glad I did not invest any of my time in learning too much of it because it will go the way of so many other attempts they have done since .net first came out.
The fact that there has not been a *** in 3 years goes to show you they’ve had nothing that interesting to present. (Remember *** in Denver….)
Please *icro****, get me interested in something that I may want to turn on my PC again! (Well to be honest I have been turning it on just recently to work on XN* project. This is the only thing that’s really caught my interest in the last year.)
Have fun at ***… I’m going to go to where the cool kids are at: WWDC 2009
UPDATE: The Post was censored to protect the innocent and avoid the backlash that some of my partners are worried about happening because they seemed to not be able to take any criticism. They would rather tell them they are the best and everything is perfect than let them know they have some work to do.
Personally those days are over for me and I will choose what is the right technology for the job and not just drink the kool-aid because I’ve been told so. I won’t hesitate to pick Technology A over B if it’s better. Yes even times I will not suggest Apple products to people where it does not make sense. Hard to believe but its true! But this is become rare because at least they do listen in their own ways. (Perfect example is the changes to the App Store for iPhone Apps. Still not perfect but they are hearing the community and making the changes.)
