Built in RSS Viewer in Safari 2.0

One of the new features that I really like is the new RSS Viewer in Safari 2.0 (Part of OS 10.4)

If a site has an RSS Feed, Safari will detect the feed and add a RSS icon in the address bar. When you click the RSS icon, you are presented the page as an RSS feed. I have noticed, not all sites can be auto detected. I think it based on how the site was designed. However if you do find the link to get the RSS feed and click it, it will display the RSS Feed.

Here is my site in the normal html view:

and here is the site using the built-in RSS viewer:

The RSS view also has a nice feature to do a quick search on a keyword, show by today, yesterday, this month and last month. This feature comes very handy for NEWS sites that I do not subscribe to. (I'm not interested in receiving 200 new stories a day in my RSS Reader). When I view the New York Times site, I can view the page with the RSS reader and then look for keywords that I am interested in. You can also limit the amount of text per entry. I've found this useful if I want to see as many headlines as possible.

I've heard that IE 7 will also have a RSS reader. I know Firefox does include something like this, but the design and speed of Safari is so much better.

Another feature that is useful is the way it notifies if any new entries have been added since I last viewed the feed. It will put the total number of new entries for each section on the bookmarks bar. It's a nice way to know if there is a new story at Wired!

The new RSS Viewer in Safari has NOT replaced my RSS News Reader. It does do some things better than a reader, but I still prefer to use Pulp Fiction to subscribe my feeds! Nothing like waking up in the morning to see that I have 50 new entries to read!!
