Yes I have made the switch
Well I have to tell you I've made the switch over to Apple. Anyone that has known me for the last 8 years, you would think that I worked for Microsoft. In the past I would make sure I was on every beta product that Microsoft introduced and run the next version of Windows months before it was released. Don't get me wrong I really love Microsoft and I've made a DAMN good living writing applications on the Microsoft platform.
However things are a changing! In Oct of 2003 I purchased a Apple G5. All I can tell you is that I LOVE my new Apple computer. The new Mac OS 10.3 is YEARS ahead of Windows (I hope my friends in Redmond are not reading this). It's extremly fast, boots up even faster and it is not getting slower as Windows tends to do over time. I've been using it to do video and photo editing. The G5 has become my primary way to surf the internet and read email. When it comes to digital music players, iTunes is the by far the best music player out there.
The main item that started the switch: the iPod. Madeline got one at Xmas from Santa (good call Santa) back in 2002 and I was blown away by its design and architecture. I started using it with the old iMac that we bought in 2001 (which almost got put in the garage because no one was using it). Then one day I hooked up the video camera to the iMac and started playing around iMovie. Well that's all that it took and I was hooked! I was using it more and more but I really needed to get a newer Mac with a bigger display. So I bought the G5 with a 20 inch flat panel display! (You can see the display and the G5 in the Halloween pictures for 2003)
My only rub is that when it comes to development tools (if you don't know me, I write software for a living), nothing beats Microsoft.NET. What I've been doing is using Terminal Services to my Windows notebook and using my G5 to write my code for work. I was hoping to use Virtual PC but until they have a new version that works with G5, I will have to continue using Terminal Services. If they make a G5 notebook and Virtual PC is fast enough to run Visual Studio, my next notebook will be an Apple. Everything else I can do in OS X. Microsoft Office for OS X is 100% compatible so even that I can run without using Virtual PC.
My other problem: NO games for the Mac. That reason alone I will have to keep a Windows computer.
My biggest thing I hate about OS X is that instead of using the Control Key for keyboard shortcuts, it uses the Apple key! (At least copy, cut and paste are still C, X and V respectively) I bet you thought I was going to say the single button mouse! Nope! I plugged in a wireless mouse before I even booted it up! There is no way I could survive without my second button for popup menus!
The next time you are in a CompUSA or by an Apple store, really take a look at Apple....If a die hard Windows user like myself can make the switch to Apple then Steve Jobs must really be doing something right!!
